I'm the host of The Ethical Rainmaker, a new podcast launching on July 29th. I spent the last 15 years working in the nonprofit sector, and I've always felt that on fundraising, something is a little bit off. Michelle Shireen Muri: From grounding practices and donor experiences instead of a community's needs, to a lack of political race, class, or power analysis, traditional fundraising practices often perpetuate the very injustices that the nonprofit sector wishes to end. Speaker 2: And what happens is that a lot of the systems that we expect everyone to conform to are very biased towards a certain type of organization or a certain type of duty things that are very, very white. Michelle Shireen Muri: The foundation of most wealth and foundations themselves were built off the backs of enslaved people, of indigenous people, of murdered people and stolen land extractive practices. Michelle Shireen Muri: Most of that money is locked up in foundations, which were built as tax shelters. We need to unlock that money and release it to the communities that were damaged by the making of that money, and to communities who need it today. Michelle Shireen Muri: I'm calling this podcast, The Ethical Rainmaker, because I think we all take pride in the fundraising sector, in bringing in lots of money so that our organizations can thrive and do the work that they're meant to do on behalf of the community, and sometimes that's called rainmaking. But I also see that we have many ethical considerations that we're not used to making, and that's why I called it The Ethical Rainmaker. I want to make sure that for those who feel disturbed by the way that fundraising has traditionally been done, there are ethical ways in which we can do our work and we should be exploring them together. Speaker 3: We've all been stuck in such a messed up sector for so long that we just get stuck in thinking that there's only one way for us to fundraise, one way for us to do our work. And now we have to be kind of wildly risk averse when it comes to managing our finances. Speaker 3: And meanwhile, it's a crisis out there. You've got to be able to break those assumptions open and do this work differently. Michelle Shireen Muri: The Ethical Rainmaker was created for people who, like me, are uncomfortable with the current practices of fundraising and want to do things differently. So we'll explore the way forward with today's Rainmakers across the nation, with today's visionaries, re-imaginers, and reformers of the third sector. Nonprofit work is already hard and it is going to be a little more difficult when we ask these tough questions, but just because something has been working, doesn't mean that it's right. Michelle Shireen Muri: These conversations are challenging, the work is hard, but ultimately it's worth it for the new future that we're creating together. Come join me. Michelle Shireen Muri: Again, this is Michelle Shireen Muri, your host of The Ethical Rainmaker, and I'm so excited to introduce you to this podcast. Our first episode comes out July 29th. Just discovered the podcast this week after registering for the CCF Town Hall series. This is so refreshing and insightful, especially as a BIPOC member of the NGO industrial complex. I am adding this podcast to my self-care rituals. <3
